I’d like this one to be an in-depth, thorough article and not a superficial blog post.
It is hard to contradict Jakob Nielsen, the usability guru, even when he takes an unpopular stance and speaks against blogs. But I really think that he completely misses the point in opposing "in-depth content" (articles) to "numerous superficial postings" (blogs). The blog medium is neutral in regard to the quality of contents: let’s not confuse content and container. And blogs are not incompatible with different post length, publishing frequencies (as pointed out by Luca De Biase while highlighting low frequencies in some Nòva100 blogs) and discontinuous quality level, mixing deep expertise with personal, sometimes even superficial, remarks. The "voice" of a blog, that peculiar character which makes it worth reading, is also determined by a unique combination of all those parameters.
After all, Nielsen’s alertbox column could be turned into an excellent blog by simply allowing comments, registering trackbacks and giving a RSS feed. Let’s not forget that idiosyncrasies may come out between the lines, even in the most professionally cold articles, giving a personal touch and making an author’s column worth reading. Just like off-topic posts on an expert’s blog.
