Secular Christmas

If it were just a matter of belief, or faith, then I should not care about Christmas. And I am even less involved in the "decorated tree festivity" (as my wife calls the consummerism-induced two-months-long period that culminates with Christmas). Yet, I am happy to exchange greetings, good wishes and handshakes and hugs (while gifts are traditionally exchanged in a different occasion here). I know that the second half of December, being the darkest month in the northern hemisphere, is a time when light and hope has always been spontaneously celebrated in all the cultures I can think of, but this is still not enough to justify my emotional involvement in Christmas.

So, my personal meaning for celebrating Christmas is simply this: sometimes it is good to be a conformist. As long as values are used to promote fraternity and not exclusion. So this is the best way I can find to sincerely wish you all a happy Christmas.
