Isn’t open source the opposite of branded? (in Italian, instead of “branded”, I’d say “firmato”: signed, as if by an individual creator)
EDAG is a German Engineering and Design company, mainly known for its sophisticated concept cars. The
new EDAG Light Car – open source concept (not a name that sticks, anyway…) has been just unveiled at the Geneva Motor show and it
bears innovative elements in materials, construction and engineering – with an
OLED system that enables customized communication with the outside,
e.g. other drivers.
my beliefs about driving etiquette to the guy flashing his lights
behind me on the motorway, in a series of Morse-coded insults.
But the most distinctive feature is EDAG’s proposal to further develop
the prototype by making the blueprints available to any self-proposed
partner who would like to take part in the project. So, back to the
initial question: is the Open Source approach – by definition, one
where the collectivity is more important than the individual –
compatible with such a distinguished, style-centered brand? My opinion
is that the contradiction is just nominal, and it adds to the overall
coolness of the concept…
